From Cybernetics to Tunnel Technology: Two New Forces at Trafsys
Annette Bildøy | 22. September 2025
Trafsys continues to grow, and this autumn we’ve welcomed two new colleagues who are already making their mark on our projects. Øyvind Sørheim has joined as an automation technician, and Ruben Eik as a software and automation engineer. Both have been with us since September 1st.
Experience That Matters
Øyvind holds a certificate of apprenticeship as an automation technician and has more than 20 years of experience in automation — including five years offshore with GE Energy and 15 years at Tine, where he eventually became responsible for automation at Tine Bergen. At Trafsys, he is now working on upgrading switches in the Byfjord and Mastrafjord tunnels and building new data cabinets for the Bogstunnel.
Technical Expertise and Fresh Thinking
Ruben comes from Klepp at Jæren and holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical power engineering and a master’s in cybernetics. Cybernetics is about the control and regulation of dynamic systems, with a focus on mathematical modeling and how this can be applied through control engineering and programming.
After several years as a developer and consultant at Tietoevry, he now brings this expertise to Trafsys. His first task is to develop a PLC simulator for Vegvokteren, the system used by the road management center to monitor the roads. The simulator makes it possible to test events such as tunnel closures or fire response plans and see how traffic is affected.
“It’s an exciting way to learn the tunnel systems from the inside,” says Ruben.
“I find that people here are very willing to share their knowledge, and I really appreciate that Øyvind Sørheim
Up and Running Quickly
During their first weeks, they followed Trafsys’ new onboarding program, which includes an introduction to the project department, ongoing projects, and the tools they need in their daily work. The program provides a structured start, clear steps, and close follow-up from both a mentor and a project manager.
“People here are always happy to share their knowledge, and that makes everyday work both easier and more enjoyable,” says Øyvind.
Ruben especially highlights the mentoring system: “It gives me confidence to know that I always have someone to spar with. That way, I can move forward quickly when I get stuck, and I learn more in the process.”
Passions Beyond Work
Ruben enjoys strategic challenges—whether it’s chess, League of Legends, or playing Pokémon cards with his younger brothers. Øyvind finds peace on mountain hikes, with Løvstakken as a favorite, and is currently building an advanced car simulator at home with realistic details.
A Place Where People and Technology Meet
In a short time, they’ve gained a clear sense of the culture at Trafsys.
“There’s laughter in the hallways, and at the same time, a lot of technical expertise to learn from,” says Øyvind. Ruben nods in agreement:
“I get challenges that help me grow, and I feel included.”
When asked to describe Trafsys in three words, they both agree:
Tunnel. Inclusion. Technology.
