Our article “Piloting Lane-Sensitive and Cost-Efficient Automatic Incident Detection by DAS” will be presented at the ITS European Congress 2025 in Seville, May 19-21.
In May, Trafsys will go to Seville to present its incident detection system Trafsense at the ITS European Congress. This year’s congress, which is the 16th edition, is the largest in Europe within intelligent transport systems (ITS), and is an important meeting place for public and private players. The organizer ERTICO – ITS Europe has received a large number of contributions, and Trafsys’ article “Piloting Lane-Sensitive and Cost-Efficient Automatic Incident Detection by DAS” is among those that have been accepted for presentation.
It’s motivating to see the results achieved with the Trafsense system in the Lyderhorn tunnel reach the European ITS community, says Stian Astad Sørngård, Trafsys’ head of data science.
The article is based on the Pilot-T project that Trafsys has carried out in collaboration with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in the Lyderhorn tunnel on Rv. 555 in Bergen in the period 2022-24.
The project has demonstrated how the Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology can be used to detect traffic incidents in a road tunnel in a robust, and not least, cost-effective manner.
With DAS you can capture traffic flows, track individual vehicles, detect incidents and create smarter transport solutions – all with the help of fiber optics. The technology reduces the need for physical sensors, provides less maintenance and increased flexibility for future infrastructure.
The project has received support from Innovation Norway’s Pilot-T programme, which contributes to the development of safer and more efficient transport solutions with a lower environmental footprint.
